In which we discuss the life and times of Laura Ingalls Wilder, her family, and her friends.
It’s been a few years since I last posted here. Sorry about that, Laura Ingalls Wilder fans. Life simply got in the way. Between starting a new job and the general busyness of the last few seasons, my Little House research ended up on the back burner. But even while I was away, revisiting this blog was never far from my mind.
I’ve spent a lot of my hiatus thinking about the real history of the Ingalls and Wilder families especially the parts that didn’t always make it into the books or the classic 1970s TV show.
When I started rooting around in this blog again, I noticed something through the comments and search queries: people are still deeply curious about the real-life history of these families.
Over the years, I’ve lent my copy of Pioneer Girl to many family members and friends. Most of them are genuinely surprised to learn just how much the TV version differed from reality. Now, I’m not a Laura Ingalls Wilder scholar by any means, but I am a dedicated "LIW geek," and that’s the perspective I’m bringing back to you. I love learning about this family and sharing that passion with others.
Recently on social media, I saw someone ask why Albert was never mentioned in the Little House books. We've been here before. The whole "what about Albert" thing is a bit of a pet peeve.
The other major factor pulling me back toward Walnut Grove and De Smet is the news of the upcoming Netflix Little House on the Prairie reboot. With the series set to premiere this summer, there is a fresh wave of interest directed toward this little hobby blog.
From what we’ve seen in the trailers, this new adaptation is aiming for a grittier, more realistic look at frontier life. As I’ve mentioned in the past, I was never a fan of the over-embellished and, frankly, silly nature of the original TV show. However, if Netflix stays true to the books, or better yet, the real-life experiences of the Ingalls family, I will definitely be here for it.
Moving forward, I’ll be back here as time permits to share more of what I’ve learned about the Ingalls and Wilder families. I might even do a comparison with the Netflix reboot... but only if it isn’t ridiculous! I have no patience for that.
What are some things related to the Ingalls family that you’d like to dive into first? Let me know in the comments!
